Steelers avenge last year's final

Posted Saturday, July 25, 2009 by Fohi Manager
Fontana Steelers move on; Upland Highlanders sent home.  Fontana's win avenges last year's Summer League Championship loss to Upland.  In 2008, both teams were tied at 2 goals a piece; when Upland took command of the title match in penalties.

The Fontana boys soccer team beat Upland H.S. by a score of 2-0 on 7/22/09.  In the semifinal of the FoHi Summer League, the steelers boiled the Highlander Defense with an uptempo pressure. Tied 0-0 at halftime; the steeler offense turned up the defensive pressure inwhat seemed to be a an even match for both teams.  Both the Steelers and Highlanders had sevearl opportunities in the first half to go ahead in the match but impressive goalkeeper play contained both teams to a halftime draw.  The Steelers' second half pressure, caused several Upland defenders to make key mistakes which allowed the Steeler Offense to ignite.

Joel Casarez and Johnathan Madrid each scored a goal, while Eric Corona and Brian Lopez added assists.  Alfonso Cano and company maintained the Steeler Defense in check.  Next for the Steelers is a crosstown final against Kaiser H.S.  That game will be played on 7/27/09 at 5:30 pm; highlights will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable.

The Fontana-Upland matchup was the fifth time in three years that the Steelers and Highlanders have met.  The recent meetings between both schools has sparked a friendly rivalry among two of the county's top premier soccer schools.  The results from Wednesdays' game gives the steelers an ovearll edge in the new formed rivalry.
